Terms of Reference (TOR) for Digital Communications Specialist at Africa Research and Impact Network (ARIN)

Position: Digital Communications Specialist

Location: ARIN Office, Nairobi, Kenya

Duration: 12 Months (Renewable based on performance)

Reporting to: Manager, Communications  or Press

  1. Background

Africa Research and Impact Network (ARIN) is a premier research network in Africa, dedicated to fostering research and policy engagement on climate change, sustainability, and development issues. ARIN seeks a highly skilled professional to design and manage our website, create compelling graphic content, and handle our social media communication to enhance our online presence and engagement.   1. Objective

The objective of this assignment is to design and maintain ARIN’s website, develop graphic content for various communication materials, and manage social media platforms to ensure effective dissemination of ARIN’s research, events, and initiatives.

  1. Scope of Work

The Digital Communications Specialist will be responsible for the following tasks:

Website Design and Management:

  • Design, develop, and maintain the ARIN website to ensure it is visually appealing, user-friendly, and up-to-date.
  • Ensure the website is optimized for performance, security, and accessibility across all devices.
  • Regularly update website content, including research publications, news, events, and other relevant information.
  • Implement SEO best practices to increase website visibility and traffic.
  • Monitor website analytics and prepare regular reports on website performance.

Graphic Design:

  • Create high-quality graphics for ARIN’s publications, reports, presentations, and communications materials.
  • Design banners, infographics, and other visual content for the website and social media platforms.
  • Ensure all graphic content adheres to ARIN’s branding guidelines and enhances the organization’s visual identity.

Social Media Communication:

  • Develop and implement a social media strategy to enhance ARIN’s online presence and engagement.
  • Manage ARIN’s social media accounts (e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook,  Instagram) by creating and posting engaging content regularly.
  • Monitor social media trends and respond to interactions to build a strong online community.
  • Track and analyze social media metrics to measure the effectiveness of campaigns and strategies.
  • Collaborate with project teams to promote ARIN’s events, research, and initiatives through social media.
  1. Deliverables
  • A fully functional, optimized, and regularly updated ARIN website.
  • A portfolio of high-quality graphic designs for various communication needs.
  • A robust social media presence with increased engagement and followers.
  • Regular analytical reports on website and social media performance.
  1. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Web Design, Communications, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in website design and management, graphic design, and social media communication.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
  • Excellent understanding of social media platforms, tools, and best practices.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  1. Reporting and Supervision

The Digital Communications Specialist will report to the Manager, Communications or Press and work closely with other team members to ensure alignment with ARIN’s overall communication strategy.

  1. Terms and Conditions
  • Contract duration: 12 months, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.
  • Competitive remuneration based on qualifications and experience.
  • Flexible working arrangements with the possibility of remote work once  a week
