COP28 presents a significant opportunity to amplify the voices of African communities and showcase the transformative potential of LLA. LLA prioritizes the needs and aspirations of local communities, enabling them to design and implement context-specific solutions that address their unique vulnerabilities and opportunities. With LLA at the forefront, ARIN envisions a future where communities thrive in a changing climate.

Through our research and capacity building efforts, ARIN strives to strengthen resilience and foster sustainable development across Africa. We aim to empower communities to develop innovative approaches through climate-smart agriculture, water management, and disaster preparedness, harnessing their ingenuity and capacity for adaptation.

Our engagement extends beyond LLA, and include a range of critical initiatives that address the multifaceted impacts of climate change. Recognizing the inextricable link between climate and health, ARIN has been actively engaged in efforts to strengthen the capacity of African countries to develop and implement effective climate change and health policies and interventions. We are currently actively supporting research on the health impacts of climate change and advocating for increased investment in climate-resilient health systems, ensuring that communities remain healthy and resilient in the face of climate change.

Further, ARIN has been at the forefront of efforts to build urban resilience in Africa. We recognize that cities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and we are committed to helping them develop and implement effective adaptation strategies. Through our work on urban resilience, ARIN is supporting cities across Africa to develop comprehensive climate risk assessments, identify priority adaptation measures, and access financing for implementation.

As we gather for COP28, let us harness the wisdom and resilience of African communities to shape a climate action agenda that is truly inclusive and transformative. LLA, climate change and health, and urban resilience must be at the forefront of our efforts, empowering communities to take ownership of their climate futures and build a more resilient, equitable, and healthy Africa.

Building on the momentum of COP28, ARIN will host the ARIN Conference 2023 from December 14-15, 2023, to delve into the crucial role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in driving Africa’s just transition and sustainable development.

The conference will explore how STI can be harnessed to address Africa’s pressing challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, and climate change. It will also showcase the continent’s rich STI potential and highlight the innovative work being done by African scientists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers

Together, we can create a world where all communities, particularly those in Africa, can thrive in a changing climate.
