IMPLEMENTATION OF MINI-GRID SYSTEMS TO BOOST ELECTRICITY DEMAND; A CASE STUDY OF INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF THE UTILITIES 2.0 PROJECT IN KIWUMU VILLAGE, MUKONO DISTRICT

Introduction.

Mini-grids are essential for Uganda’s electrification efforts, providing electricity access to underserved areas. A study of the Utilities 2.0 project in Kiwumu Village explored the implementation of innovation of innovative mini-grid features and their impact on electricity demand in resource-constrained settings. The study found that a combination of centralized and decentralized models implemented through a consortium of electricity organizations was successful. The productive use of electricity significantly influenced demand, alongside with household size and appliance ownership. Community members perceived the electricity as affordable, of good quality, and a catalyst for socioeconomic development, improving education, security, and other aspects of life. Dr. Mary Nantongo, Dr. Nicholas Mukisa, and Ms. Namono Maureen, lecturers at Makerere University gave an in-depth knowledge on how the Utilities 2.0 Project is impacting the local communities.

Consumer Demand Stimulation

To enhance electricity consumption, the initiative incorporates programs for financing appliances and fostering business incubation. These strategies are designed to motivate both local enterprises and households to adopt electrical devices, which in turn raises overall energy usage. By making appliances more accessible and promoting entrepreneurial ventures, the project aims to create a culture of electricity utilization that contributes to economic growth.

Central to the project is the active involvement of local communities throughout the planning and implementation stages. A primary goal of the project is to connect 400 households and businesses to a reliable electricity supply. By stimulating demand for energy and supporting the growth of local businesses, the initiative contributes significantly to the region’s economic development. Reliable access to electricity is instrumental in fostering a conducive environment for business activities and improving the quality of life for residents.
