His research focuses on climate change, urban planning, and ecological modeling, with expertise in GIS, GeoAI and remote sensing. In his work, Mshelia employs machine learning techniques to model land cover changes, urban heat islands, and their ecological impacts, with the goal of informing sustainable development policies and enhancing urban resilience in rapidly growing cities. Mshelia previously worked as a Research Assistant with the Australian National University (ANU), where he conducted an inventory study on Urban Climate Governance in Lagos (Nigeria) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). He holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Health Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria. Dr. Eze has over ten years of professional research experience in diverse fields of microbiology, pharmacology, and natural products drug discovery. His current research focuses on “implementing sustainable methodologies for improving the health of humans, animals, and the environment.” Dr. Eze’s research findings in these fields have been published in reputable scientific journals and presented at several conferences. Dr. Eze’s work has earned him several honours and awards, including the AREF-EDCTP Joint Preparatory Fellowship Award, the International Foundation for Science (IFS) Research Grant, and international postdoctoral fellowships in Germany and the United Kingdom. His long-term goal is to make significant advances in his current research area while also training and mentoring the next generation of scientists. He is an expert in research, data collation, interpretation and technical report writing. Currently serving as the Founder and Executive Director of the Africa Research and Impact Network (ARIN), he excels in developing strong evidence-based actions and strategies that are adaptable and well linked to national, regional, and international climate change initiatives. Joanes previously served as the Director Partnerships and Impact and the Head of the Climate Resilient Economies Programme at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) to become one of the best in the world, ranking third globally and the best in Africa according to the 2016 ICCG rankings based on research and policy work. He has been extensively involved in academia and research, serving as an Associate at the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA), University of Nairobi, and as a Research Fellow at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the United Nations University. Joanes has published widely in international journals, books, media and blogs focusing on resilience, knowledge systems as well as international politics with over 1000 citations on Google Scholar. He has successfully led the design and implementation of numerous funded projects. He played a pivotal role in synthesizing key community-based adaptation initiatives across the world which provided significant evidence towards the establishment of the Locally Led Adaptation Agenda within the global climate action arena. Joanes is particularly passionate about making science work for the local vulnerable communities. He has particular interest in strengthening the Science-Policy Interface in Africa. He founded the Grassroot Impact Centre- an initiative operating and empowering local communities including girls, youth, women with knowledge on resilience and innovation and seeks to develop models in which research can better align and support the needs of local communities. At the strategic level, Joanes is a member of several high-level technical boards. He is the Lead Expert in the development of the African Union Green Innovation Framework, which guides member states in accelerating green growth actions; the Lead expert for developing the First Kenya’s Innovation Outlook Framework and a member of the Strategic Advisory Group for the UK Research and Innovation Fund (UKRI). He is a Lecturer in Food Science at Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK, with experience in Africa, Europe, and Asia. After his PhD in India in 2014 followed by teaching and postdoc positions in Cameroon, Belgium, and Leeds in the UK, he joined Christ Church in December 2021. Besides teaching chemistry, biochemistry, and food science topics, Joe also supports the newly launched Food Science and Nutrition course in the section of Natural and Applied Sciences. Joe is developing a research programme at the nexus of food systems, climate change, nutrition, and health, investigating how climate change and climate-smart agricultural practices affect food nutritional quality and safety, and the subsequent impact on health of the consumers. Moreover, Joe has extensive skills in food analysis, using both basic and stat-of-the-art analytical chemistry methods and equipment. He supports the agrifood industry with chemical and nutritional analysis of foods and beverages, including macro and micronutrients, flavour compounds, phytochemicals, trace elements, toxins including mycotoxins, allergens, pesticide residues, and processing contaminants such as acrylamide. His current research is focused on governance for addressing ocean acidification through regulation of its response strategies. He has previously worked as a non-resident research fellow at the intergovernmental policy think tank, African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) and Africa Sustainability Hub (ASH) focusing on climate resilient economies and natural resource economies. He completed his master’s research at the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development in Shanghai, China. He is also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. As a broadly trained natural resource scientist, Chidiebere is well suited to understand and communicate the connections among the ecological, economic, policy, and social dimensions of these systems within the context of sustainable development. At the Centre for Landscape and Climate Research, University of Leicester, Chidiebere is part of the project team working on the development of landscape decisions framework for a holistic land use system that is coherent with policy goals on Net zero emissions, renewable energy uptake, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and multifunctional landscapes.
