Dr. Gérard Xavier D. GBENOU, Researcher in Livestock Systems and Greenhouse Gases Assessment
I’m A Research Assistant at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin, and I have a strong interest about adaptation and mitigation of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In order to increase livestock productivity while mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially methane, my research investigates farmers’ feeding practices based on locally accessible resources, and realities. I improved my ability to measure and estimate GHG. My research’s findings have shed important light on how sustainable practices contribute to climate resilience. Approximately ten of my articles have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Between 2022 and 2025, I received five regional and international awards for my efforts to advance climate-smart agriculture. Passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice, I collaborate closely with rural communities and livestock farmers to co-develop climate solutions. I hope to take the lead in developing practical solutions for resilient livestock systems that balance environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity in SSA and beyond by using a methodical, creative, and cooperative approaches. In the context of climate change solutions, I am also skilled in modeling and ruminal microbiology. My hobbies include hiking, music and soccer.
