Dr Joseph Galani is an ARIN Fellow of the 2023 cohort. He is a Lecturer in Food Science at Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK, with experience in Africa, Europe, and Asia. After his PhD in India in 2014 followed by teaching and postdoc positions in Cameroon, Belgium, and Leeds in the UK, he joined Christ Church in December 2021. Besides teaching chemistry, biochemistry, and food science topics, Joe also supports the newly launched Food Science and Nutrition course in the section of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Joe is developing a research programme at the nexus of food systems, climate change, nutrition, and health, investigating how climate change and climate-smart agricultural practices affect food nutritional quality and safety, and the subsequent impact on health of the consumers. Moreover, Joe has extensive skills in food analysis, using both basic and stat-of-the-art analytical chemistry methods and equipment. He supports the agrifood industry with chemical and nutritional analysis of foods and beverages, including macro and micronutrients, flavour compounds, phytochemicals, trace elements, toxins including mycotoxins, allergens, pesticide residues, and processing contaminants such as acrylamide.

Joe is passionate of Old Jazz & Soul music, travelling to new places and experiencing new foods and cultures, and languages including French, English and Spanish.
